Introducing Geographic Consulting’s newest addition; Hema Balkaran – Biology Research Analyst

It is my pleasure to introduce the newest member of the Geographic Consulting team. Hema Balkaran and I worked together when I was a Research Specialist at the University of the Virgin Islands and Hema was a student. She was always hard-working, smart and organized. When Geographic Consulting was awarded a contract to conduct a greenhouse trial with native tree species, Hema was the first person we thought of to run the project. We are very glad to have her on board. I have just added her biography to our web page. You can read it below.

I was born on the island of Trinidad and Tobago. I later moved to St. Croix where I obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology at the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI). In 2007, I conducted a field study with Dr. Brian Daley and his team studying soil characteristics in stream beds in various land cover classes. While at UVI, I was a Minority Biomedical Research Support – Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (MBRS-RISE) Scholar which provided opportunities for me to gain experience from several research programs.  I conducted research; involving spinal cord injury at the University of Maryland, developing sea urchin microsatellites at the University of Florida and conducting genetic diversity research between banana varieties with Dr. Alice Stanford at UVI. I am currently working with Dr. Daley and Geographic Consulting on a greenhouse experiment testing various native tree species for suitability in post-industrial reforestation. I intend to further my studies in the continuing, near future in the field of biomedical science
